Sweet & Smokey Texas Pulled Brisket

Everyone loves pulled brisket, and it’s easy to see why – tender shreds of meat piled high and mixed with a scrumptious barbecue sauce. This is one of my favorites – a sweet and smokey version with depth of flavor from the smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, honey, and brown sugar. In this recipe, you are creating your own barbecue sauce , but it is so easy and worth the extra step – you can mix the sauce while the meat is searing.

It’s fun to serve this pulled brisket in a large bowl with rolls and Sesame Cabbage Slaw for a winning pulled brisket sandwich station.

  • 3 – 4 lb brisket
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cups ketchup
  • 2 tsp mustard
  • 14 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 6 tbsp honey
  • 6 tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • Pinch of ground pepper

Heat olive oil in a large pan. Sear brisket on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Combine the rest of the ingredients in a measuring cup or bowl. Place brisket in a crock pot, and pour sauce over the brisket and stir to coat the brisket.

Cook on high until the brisket is tender and pulls apart easily, about 5-6 hours. Transfer beef to a plate, and shred using two forks. Mix the pulled brisket with the remaining sauce and serve.
